The life of a Marine Surveyor
http://www.brookesbell.com I went to sea after completing A levels, wanting a change from education and wishing to explore the world – ah, the foolishness of youth!
I started my sea going career as Deck Cadet with a British Shipping company. After a three month period at college to learn the basics of sea going life, I joined my first ship in London, and together with nine other cadets, for our first voyage to sea. What an adventure, dolphins and whales swimming alongside the ship as we steamed eastwards towards the Suez Canal and new horizons embarking on a voyage of a lifetime.
We sailed down the east coast and around the south coast of Africa, calling at different ports, meeting new faces, seeing different countries and having good “runs ashore”. I had to pinch myself, I was being paid to do this, and being fed handsomely – very important when you are a teenager! The ship returned to London four months later, and I went on a period of leave, eager to tell everyone of the wonderful experiences that I had.
